Since Rudolf Brun introduced the guild constitution in 1336, they have been shaping the city government as influential civic and craft associations. Many guilds supported Huldrych Zwingli's reforms and contributed to the council's rapid implementation of the Reformation. Their involvement made Zurich the defining city reform of the 16th century.
