The Root of Being

Description

After the highly successful guest performance "Birds" in the 2021/22 season, we are once again presenting the German-language premiere of a work by Wajdi Mouawad. The French-Canadian author is known for his profound and deeply human stories. The direction is by the Burgtheater's artistic director himself, Stefan Bachmann.

Talyani Waqar Malik, the protagonist of this play, exists in five different versions. His five selves are spread all over the world: In Beirut, he is the owner of a jeans shop; in Rome, a Ferrari-driving neurosurgeon; in Quebec, a successful artist; in Paris, an unambitious taxi driver; and in Texas, a murderer sentenced to death. Every place of life, every milieu, every experience shapes a new identity, a new character, a new personality. At the beginning of the story(ies) is the explosion of 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate in August 2020, which destroyed the port of Beirut and damaged large parts of the city. The play follows the five Talyanis and their families during the following week and shows how the catastrophe echoes in their lives.

General Information

The play 'The Root of Being' is performed at the Theater Winterthur in Winterthur. It is based on a work by the French-Canadian author Wajdi Mouawad and deals with the effects of an explosion in the port of Beirut on the lives of various characters. The performance shows the diverse identities of the protagonist in different life worlds.
