Description

On October 21, 1966, a landslide in Aberfan, Wales, claimed the lives of 144 people, including 116 children. This real event forms the basis of the play.
The play is set in June 1967, about eight months after the disaster. During this time, a group of grieving mothers regularly meet in a room above a hotel to talk, cry, and, between pain and memories, also laugh in a protected setting. When they secretly invite a Revlon representative, hoping to regain some normality and self-esteem through makeup tips, an unexpected conversation unfolds about loss, guilt, and beauty, both outward and inward.

This emotional, dialogue-driven play, based on a real historical event, moves between pain, irony, and gentle hope, touching as much as it provokes thought. It is the first stage play by the South Wales-born author Neil Anthony Docking, premiered at the Edinburgh Festival in 2017, and received an Olivier nomination as well as the Off-West End Award for Best New Play in 2018.
