He admitted himself to the sanatorium because his latest discovery, the world formula and thus "the system of all possible inventions," could mean the end of humanity if in the wrong hands. His two fellow patients turn out to be secret agents of rival powers, who are after Möbius and his manuscripts. But everyone has underestimated Dr. Mathilde von Zahnd. "Dramatic tension can deceive the viewer into exposing themselves to reality, but not force them to withstand or even cope with it," writes Friedrich Dürrenmatt, who in "Die Physiker" raises questions about responsibility and society's handling of science and new technologies, such as artificial intelligence. And he arrives at uncomfortable answers. His bitter modern classic is—literally—the counterpart to "Jekyll & Hyde" and "Frankenstein" at the Pforzheim Theater.
