Die Mosbruggers. An Artist Family at Lake Constance

The artist family Mosbrugger from Vorarlberg was active from 1795 until the death of the last painter, Joseph, in 1869 at Lake Constance, in the surrounding landscapes and the Swiss countryside. Their work includes impressive, deeply psychological portraits, representative family pictures, spiritual motifs, landscape painting, and genre scenes. Their era was marked by warlike unrest, famines, political, economic, and cultural upheaval, the Revolution of 1848/49, and the long phase of reaction with initial advances into the modern world until almost the founding of the Empire in 1871. The exhibition displays, through significant loans and from the extensive private collection, the broad scope of the work of the three remarkable artists Wendelin, Friedrich, and Joseph Mosbrugger and their environment. Thus, a fascinating picture of an epoch is created, characterized equally by stagnation, retrograde romanticism, and political, cultural, and economic upheaval.
