The History and Function of Fashion Photography

Description

"Increasingly, fashion is fashion photography," writes Susan Sontag in 1978 in an essay about Avedon, describing fashion photography as a special form of portrait photography. As part of the exhibition "Mise en Scène," the Textile Museum St. Gallen invites you to a discussion with Dr. phil. Martin Lilkendey. Indeed, fashion photography determines what portrait photography is. We know that a photo makes us into an image that is observed. Therefore, we adopt an attitude that can correspond to us if we manage to transform ourselves into the person we want to be. The ideas about this are subconscious clichés of the portraits we know, have seen, understood, and accepted. All photographers and everyone who can take photos automatically refer to what they have seen. They are thus acting historically. They draw on history and thereby become part of it. Martin Lilkendey from the University of Koblenz will introduce us to examples of fashion photography shown in this exhibition and invite us to a discussion about fashion photography. The event is free; only museum admission is required. The museum will be open continuously until 6 p.m. on this day. After the museum talk, we invite you to an aperitif and exchange.
