As with all productions of the Marionettenoper, great emphasis was placed on translating music into choreographed movement for "Fledermaus". One might even say that this principle was pushed to the extreme here. When a character sits down, gets up again, takes a step, it is determined by the music. Otto Schenk, who has staged Fledermaus worldwide and is probably one of the greatest connoisseurs of this musical masterpiece, said: "No note is accidental." And this applies not only to Strauss. This connection can be found in all great opera composers. THEATER HISTORY
"Fledermaus" was created between September 1873 and March 1874. The libretto was written by Richard Genée based on a stage play by the highly successful author duo Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, who two years earlier created the basis for "Carmen," the most performed opera in the world to this day. Genée not only provided the text but also contributed significantly to the musical realization. According to recent research, even the majority of the musical material originates from his pen. He was unjustly not involved in the royalties "Fledermaus" earned. "Fledermaus" is considered the queen of operettas and, after its world premiere in Vienna, conquered the world. It is one of the few operettas regularly performed at major opera houses such as the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala in Milan, the Vienna State Opera, and also at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London.
