The act he is supposed to clarify, he has committed himself. This is clear to the audience from the outset. Thus, the play's appeal does not come from the outcome but from the course of the action. You know the perpetrator but want to see how he betrays himself and enjoy the cleverness with which he is caught. How one gets entangled in the web of his own lies and finally falls, the audacity with which patriarchy exerts its power – all this is described by Kleist with great comic sensibility, allowing us to look joyfully into societal abysses.
