The Great Dictator

Description

Charlie Chaplin's first sound film from 1940 is a biting satire on National Socialism and its fascist propaganda. He shines in the dual role of Charlie/Hynkel as well as through his courage for civil disobedience: With his character of the dictator Hynkel, Chaplin created the first Hitler caricature in the middle of World War II. The Landestheater Tübingen brings the material to the stage as a shockingly current political farce with music.

Dictator Hynkel rules the fictional country of Tomania and deports all non-Aryans to concentration camps. This includes the Jewish barber Charlie, who has just won Hanna's heart. But Charlie manages to escape because, thanks to his mustache, he is mistakenly taken for Hynkel. The dictator is put in the bunker instead of the barber, and Charlie must give the speech to the people. He senses his chance to call for resistance against tyranny and to spread the spark of hope for human dignity, freedom, and peace.
