Description
With lush rainforests and mysterious rivers, the Amazon is considered by many to be the epitome of untouched nature. But deep in the green thicket lie traces of past civilizations. The Rietberg Museum offers a new perspective on the cultural history of the Amazon. The exhibition presents spectacular archaeological finds – from intricately painted urns from Brazil to rare cocoa bottles from Ecuador – and tells of highly developed cultures that flourished long before the colonial era.
A special highlight is the immersive installation on the UNESCO site Chiribiquete, the “Sistine Chapel of Prehistory.” Monumental rock paintings from the Colombian rainforest come alive in Zurich – with projections, soundscapes, and symbolic figures like jaguars and piranhas.
Art, archaeology, and indigenous knowledge: The Legacy of the Amazon shows how body painting, jewelry, and rock art open spiritual worlds – linking past and present in an impressive way.
