Description
Schönborn’s Schlagerjazz — Olaf Schönborn (Saxophone), Laszlo Szitko (Keyboard), Martin Simon (Bass), Johannes Hamm (Drums) Schlager and Jazz – at first glance two worlds that could hardly be more different. But the Ludwigshafen saxophonist Olaf Schönborn proves with his project "Schlagerjazz" that this combination works surprisingly well. Together with the Hungarian pianist Laszlo Szitko, bassist Martin Simon, and drummer Johannes Hamm, he jazzed up songs by Bata Ilic or Katja Ebstein. The success of the experiment was shown by the audience response: the sold-out concert (January 2026) fittingly opened with "Wunder gibt es immer wieder". Titles like the "Maya the Bee" theme song by Karel Gott or "Theo, wir fahr'n nach Lodz" by Vicky Leandros also show that childhood and youth memories can be wonderfully combined with modern jazz feeling. All of this is done with a wink, but at a high musical level – after all, Schönborn, who studied jazz at the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts and Arizona State University, is one of the most prominent jazz musicians in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. If you missed the event, you have a new chance: On January 19, 2027, the Schlagerjazz will humorously and cheerfully start the new year again at Freischwimmer. Participating artists: Olaf Schönborn (Saxophone), Laszlo Szitko (Keyboard), Martin Simon (Bass), Johannes Hamm (Drums)
