Description
The Museum of Art and History of Geneva (MAH) holds more than a thousand works by Ferdinand Hodler, making it one of the most significant public collections of the artist's paintings and drawings. Remarkably, it also includes 241 notebooks and sketches in which the painter recorded daily flashes of inspiration as well as mundane domestic reminders throughout his life.
Modest by nature, these small booklets, similar in size to the old 'milk notebooks', are a true treasure for researchers and an inexhaustible source of information, allowing insight into the artist's work as well as his life and thoughts. Their meticulous study has thus helped shed light on Hodler's relationship with religion and spirituality.
This presentation aims to highlight the history and nature of this remarkable documentary material, whose interest far exceeds that of a simple archive.
