LECTURE BY LENKA ULIČNÁ The word 'dajčmeriš' is often associated with the influence of modern German on Yiddish. But could it have something to do with 'Moravian German,' which, according to the memories of Viktor Fischl, was spoken by Jews on the Moravian-Slovak border? And what Jewish languages do we actually encounter in Moravia? Through findings from the genizah and other items from the collections of the Jewish Museum in Prague, we will look at Moravia as a space where Hebrew, Yiddish, German, and Czech shaped a diverse linguistic landscape. Was Moravia a linguistic periphery, or rather one of the bridges between the Western and Eastern Jewish worlds? Lenka Uličná is the curator of manuscripts and genizah finds at the Jewish Museum in Prague and also works at the Kurt and Ursula Schubert Center for Jewish Studies at Palacký University in Olomouc, where she teaches Hebrew and leads seminars on Israeli literature and Jewish material culture.
