Description
Claudio Monteverdi's "Marienvesper" from 1610 marks a transition in music from the Renaissance to the Baroque era, which he significantly initiated in Italy. The collection of grand, elaborate psalm compositions and intimate solo concerts brings the vocal polyphony that prevailed until then to a later flourish and at the same time paves the way for a new, expressive soloistic musical form, which he had already experimented with in his opera "L’Orfeo" (1607). With this, he founded the new genre of musical theater. While in Hamburg at this time the Reformation is firmly established and Europe is on the brink of the Thirty Years' War, Rome, under Pope Paul V., to whom Monteverdi's work is dedicated, is ruled by a Counter-Reformation pope. These times of cultural upheaval are reflected in Monteverdi's music in an exemplary manner.
