Curiosity and enthusiasm – Many careers have begun with the famous Vienna Boys' Choir. When Lukas Sternath became a member there, his music-loving parents had long since set up a piano at home, on which their son, born in 2001, initially played jazz with great enthusiasm. However, the spark of classical music also ignited sustainably, leading the music world to take notice in 2022 when Sternath won first prize and seven special awards at the ARD Music Competition. Despite his remarkable successes and a steadily growing number of renowned collaborators, the pianist, a master student of Igor Levit, consciously sees himself as still at the beginning of his journey. His artistic curiosity serves as both compass and engine. "I want to spend my whole life with these works," Sternath explained when he performed both piano concertos by Johannes Brahms for the first time in 2024. The Westdeutsche Zeitung praised his interpretation as one that preserves "the exploratory, playfully concentrated search for the right sound" – simultaneously virtuosic, powerful, and carried by tender lightness. With Brahms, the young exceptional pianist now makes his debut at the Albert Concerts. Chief conductor Kazuki Yamada and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra demonstrate the qualities of their traditional ensemble not only in Béla Bartók's masterful "Concerto for Orchestra" but are also ideal partners in the symphonically dimensioned second piano concerto by Brahms, whose mature serenity and orchestral richness place the highest demands on both soloist and ensemble.
