Marc-Antoine Charpentier's "Messe de Minuit pour Noël" combines the Latin mass liturgy with French Christmas carols from the 17th century. From these familiar Noëls, Charpentier develops music of great clarity, rhythmic liveliness, and fine baroque color. The mass thus appears both festive and immediate, without losing its liturgical dignity. This creates a Christmas work that particularly charmingly combines artful composition and folk tradition.
