Description

In the lavish production by Adriana Altaras, the ancient myth becomes a gripping drama about loyalty, desire, and sacrifice.

In Sparta, two unequal brothers rule together: Castor is mortal, Pollux, as the son of Jupiter, is immortal. Both love Télaïre, who chooses Castor, while Pollux is actually promised to Télaïre's sister Phébé. When Castor falls in war, Pollux asks his divine father to bring his brother back from the underworld. But the rescue has its price: Pollux would have to descend to the underworld in Castor's place. A painful conflict between loyalty and personal longing begins, which only Jupiter himself can resolve.

Rameau combines in this work the compositional sophistication that made him famous. Virtuoso vocal lines, rich harmonies, and finely nuanced timbres vividly depict the emotional states of the characters with great intensity.
