For over 20 years, Carolin Emcke has traveled to Israel-Palestine. Most recently, she was there to speak with people from Be'eri or Jenin, from Tel Aviv or Ramallah – and to shed light on the blind spots of empathy in the local discourse. Are there limits to empathy for others? What does the remembrance of history obligate us to? Are there limits to the duty to speak in the name of human rights? Or should nothing prevent us from perceiving others as part of the universal weave? Carolin Emcke already asked herself these questions before October 7 and Gaza. But since then, they have become even more urgent. Ultimately, it is about the existential question: What does a person matter?
Carolin Emcke, born in 1967, studied philosophy in London, Frankfurt/Main, and Harvard. She earned her doctorate on the concept of "collective identities." From 1998 to 2013, Carolin Emcke traveled worldwide to crisis regions and reported on them. In 2003/2004, she was a visiting lecturer for political theory at Yale University. She is a freelance publicist and repeatedly engages in artistic projects and interventions, including the theme days "Telling War" at the House of World Cultures. For over ten years, Carolin Emcke has organized and moderated the monthly discussion series "Streitraum" at the Schaubühne Berlin. She has received multiple awards for her work. In 2016, she received the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade.
