Until the Lindau Marionette Opera "Carmen" was brought to the stage, the work was considered unperformable for a marionette theater. Nevertheless, the challenge was mastered. With 45 marionettes, brought to life by a total of 9 puppeteers, "Carmen" is by far the most elaborate production of the marionette opera. The fact that many visitors declared Lindau's "Carmen" to be the most entertaining adaptation of this material they had experienced so far confirms the decision for this opera all the more. THEATER HISTORY
Tchaikovsky was right. "Carmen" is today the most performed work in the history of musical theater. Against this background, the early death of composer Georges Bizet appears even more fatal. Bizet died only three months after the Paris premiere (March 3, 1875). He may have even committed suicide after his work failed with the Parisian audience. "Carmen" made its breakthrough on October 23, 1875, in Vienna. The audience reacted enthusiastically from the very first moment, and the excitement increased from act to act. Performances followed in Brussels, Marseille, and Lyon in 1876; in St. Petersburg, London, Dublin, and New York in 1878. In Berlin and Munich, the opera was performed for the first time in 1880. The triumphant success of the opera could no longer be stopped.
