As a feminist parable avant la lettre, the revolutionary Carmen has already thrust some beautiful banderillas into the flanks of patriarchy. The former dancer of the Béjart Ballet Lausanne now leads his own company. In an intense and sensitive contemporary adaptation for twelve performers, the choreographer redefines the cards of gender and desire. The original plot of the opera remains, but is fundamentally questioned anew. The leader of the smugglers is replaced by a female figure of power, acting as a mirror image of Carmen. Together, these two heroines form a fascinating duo – two figures of rebellion and emancipation, confronted with a male-dominated world, each challenging it in their own way. The elegant, expressive, and theatrical dance powerfully expresses the full complexity of love: attraction, rejection, fusion, betrayal. The music also breaks boundaries. Georges Bizet's iconic score dialogues with lesser-known works by the composer, reinterpreted in contemporary arrangements with jazz, electro, guitar, piano, and voice.
