CARA captivates audiences worldwide with unique interpretations of Celtic music, deeply rooted in Irish and Scottish tradition. With innovative arrangements of traditional pieces and widely acclaimed original compositions, they create a distinctive sound.
The vocal range spans from dreamy ballads to archaic Gaelic Mouth Music and original songs with contemporary social-political themes, with lead singers Gudrun Walther and Kim Edgar complementing each other with unwavering confidence.
The songs alternate with rapid instrumental pieces, driven by the virtuoso interplay of fiddle and Uilleann Pipes. The Irish bagpipe, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2017, is played by Simon Pfisterer, who studied this extraordinary instrument in Ireland.
What makes CARA especially remarkable is the interaction between guitar and piano, and the elaborate, rhythmically and harmonically rich arrangements of the band. These bear the signature of Jürgen Treyz, guitarist, producer, and musical mastermind of the band.
From the opener to the encore, CARA's concerts shine with highlights, not least through the captivating solos contributed by each band member, and surprise the audience with ever-new sounds. The multinational lineup of Irish, Scottish, and German musicians has changed over the more than 23 years of the band's history, but one thing has remained: the close friendship as the heart of this musical collaboration—entirely in the spirit of the Irish word "cara," meaning "friend." With their current album "Our Ship Is Ready," CARA responds to the challenges of our time with a reflective, hopeful, and life-affirming perspective. Themes such as emigration, love, loss, and climate change are given space, as is the remarkable power of traditional music to inspire hope even in difficult times—as a bridge between awareness of complex realities and the courage to act.
CARA usually performs as a quartet but can present their program as a quintet with Irish guest musician Cormac Byrne (Bodhrán/Percussion).
