BUBBLES #6: Christina Frey – Antlitz

Description

Christina Frey developed a visually associative research practice with the material on site during her stays in the material archive of the Sitterwerk Foundation. In doing so, she examines how things relate to each other and establishes a connection with them herself. A randomly placed lemon, a book, and a textile fabric are treated equally regardless of their materiality, shape, and origin. Certain objects quickly become favorites, while others she has to work through, and these become important pieces precisely because of that. Quality is not immediately apparent but is conveyed over time and engagement. Based on Frey's interest in the face, the exhibition presents a selection of material and processing examples, images in open books, and everyday objects from the material archive as a dense reference system. It explores the question of what connects and separates us, makes us equal, and distinguishes us. The objects condense into a temporary sculptural arrangement that continues these questions. Individual elements overlap, contrast with each other, or connect through form, color, transparency, or structure. The images in the books are mostly sculptural works of faces looking back at the viewer. The reduction of these plastic works to images and thus into the surface creates its own, unstable images that shift easily with each reproduction and new context. The dissolution of these constellations consciously creates space for a new beginning, new decisions, and experiences. What remains is the relationship to the objects. This approach thus resists the common logic of an artwork. It dissolves, is materially in flux, and thus consistently eludes commodity fixation. Christina Frey (Laufen, BL) has been awarded multiple prizes, scholarships, and acquisitions. She studied with Hannah Villiger, Jürg Stäuble, and Guido Nussbaum at the sculpture department in Basel. She has been a lecturer at the preliminary course of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts since 2004.
