Description

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor – Four Characteristic Waltzes op. 22 Ralph Vaughan-Williams – Tuba Concerto Frederic H. Cowen –«Reverie» for Orchestra Alice Mary Smith – Symphony in C minor (1863) In the first concert of the season, Sinfonia Baden presents a genuine cross-section of England's musical landscape: With Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, a composer opens the evening who can stand as a representative of the multicultural side of a global Britain. As the son of an Englishwoman and a doctor from Sierra Leone, he was one of the first dark-skinned musicians to make a name for himself. A characteristic of English orchestral music is the sound of brass instruments. Vaughan Williams' Tuba Concerto, which Sinfonia Baden will interpret with Markus Hauenstein, a soloist from the region, is entirely in this tradition. Frederic Cowen's small «Reverie» symbolically represents England's orientation towards continental music. The composer pours his own, distinctly British musical language into a typically German form, the symphonic poem. To conclude the program, Sinfonia Baden presents the first completed and performed symphony by a woman in England: Alice Mary Smith wrote her Symphony in C minor in 1863 and celebrated great successes with it. In 1883, she was elected as one of the first women to become an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music! TUBA Markus Hauenstein CONDUCTOR Roman Blum
