Beautiful pictures? Fashion photography as a form of social staging

As part of the exhibition "Mise en Scène," the Textile Museum St. Gallen invites you to a discussion with fashion sociologist Monika Kritzmöller about fashion and the images she creates. "Our media are our metaphors," explained communication scientist Neil Postman accurately. In the 21st century, we live in an image world: it has never been easier to take and share photos, which social media inundates with a flood of fashionable (self-)representations. At the same time, since the invention of photography, fashion has been a central subject of aesthetic editing and paved the way for the recognition of photography as an art form. So, what does fashion photography say about fashion? About the time of its creation as well as the context of its origin? What ideals of beauty are inscribed into the images, and what do they reveal about the respective society? A visual hermeneutic walk with fashion sociologist Monika Kritzmöller and curator Silvia Gross highlights the unnoticed and shows the blurriness of seemingly self-evident staging forms. The event is free of charge; only museum admission is required. The museum will be open continuously until 6 p.m. on this day. After the museum talk, we invite you to an aperitif and exchange.
