What separates us, what connects us? Is there a universal principle of connection? Following numerous film and video productions, BERLIN MOVES presents a live dance double bill. On the stage of Studio 1 at Uferstudios, young dancers explore the tension between separation and connection in two distinct, complementary choreographies. TOMORROW NEVER KNOWS is an interdisciplinary dance production about the search for connectedness. Between club culture and meditation, external life realities and inner perception meet. Hip-hop and breaking encounter meditative, trance-like movements and yoga asanas. To pounding Chicago house beats, contemporary electronic sounds and atmospheric, meditative compositions by Meredith Monk, dance rituals emerge between isolation and shared experience. Separating and connecting networks are the central choreographic and visual principle. The stage resembles nervous systems, organic structures and the cosmic web of invisible relationships. Together with the tape art collective Tape That and video artist Miguel Canal, a walkable installation is created, a map of inner and outer experiences that extends onto the dancers' bodies. Under the artistic direction of Lior Shneior, the BERLIN MOVERS Ensemble develops the production in a collaborative process. Dance, media art and tape art merge in TOMORROW NEVER KNOWS into an immersive performance that asks how we find connection in a digitalized present – to ourselves, to each other and to the world. The evening opens with BOBBY, a collage of several short choreographies by young dancers from various Berlin crews. In BOBBY, powerful dance images emerge, inspired by the music of Bobby McFerrin. His work combines jazz, classical, gospel and pop into a musical language that builds bridges between Afro-diasporic and European musical traditions. McFerrin became world-famous with Don't Worry, Be Happy – a song whose title was inspired by a saying of the spiritual teacher Meher Baba and which stands for confidence and openness. BOBBY is an invitation to discover one's own roots, to understand differences as strength and to let new connections grow together. Since 2016, the Berlin project BERLIN MOVES has brought together young movers from the urban dance scene with media artists, fashion designers and musicians. Bridges are created between pop culture and street dance, classical music and dance, high culture and underground. With dance in public spaces and music videos, BERLIN MOVES has mapped the city from Marzahn to Spandau and worked with such diverse Berlin locations and institutions as the Berliner Ensemble, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, the Alte Münze, Jonny Knüppel and the Floating University. Funded by the Berlin Project Fund for Cultural Education.
