The German-American pianist Benjamin Lackner released several albums with his long-standing trio before making his ECM debut with Last Decade in 2022. On the album, the Berlin-based pianist is accompanied by his ECM colleagues Mathias Eick and Manu Katché, as well as bassist Jérome Regard. The album was highly praised by critics upon release. The magazine Stereophile wrote: "ECM released some good albums in 2022, but few are as beautiful as this." In the Swiss weekly magazine Weltwoche, Peter Rüedi described Lackner's music as "a kind of classical music" and praised it as "a masterpiece that, in a nearly hypnotic melodic swirl of eight original compositions by Lackner, avoids any solo 'extravagance' and spectacular craftsmanship, instead offering a highly integrated sound and an intimate exchange of ideas." The Benjamin Lackner Quintet combines five distinct voices of the European jazz scene, with Maciej Obara and Mathias Eick as leading forces at the frontline.
