Eva Overlack, Conducting This choir/orchestra concert of the Johann Sebastian Bach Choir is a joint project with the Kammerchor Högalid from Stockholm. The concerts, one in Hamburg and one in Stockholm, focus on music from the Dresden court chapel. It was founded in 1548 and has been one of Europe's leading orchestras for nearly 500 years, since 1992 under the name Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden.
The Dresden court chapel was a musical melting pot. Here, the latest musical influences from Italy were processed and disseminated.
The center of the concert is Zelenka's Missa Sancti Josephi. Zelenka was from Bohemia and joined the Dresden court chapel as a double bassist, which he took over as director a few years later. The orchestra and the musical environment in Dresden inspired him to compose and richly instrument the Missa Sancti Josephi. Zelenka's music is captivating and unconventional. His counterpoints are highly virtuosic and demanding, his musical expression refined and very close to the text. His music is a celebration for performers and listeners alike.
The other works of the program are no less impressive! Beautifully the motet "Herr, nun lässest du deinen Diener in Frieden fahren" by Bernhard, who worked as a singer and choir director at the Dresden court chapel as well as a cantor at the Johanneum in Hamburg. Heinichen's Sinfonia is colorful and lively. Pisendel's works are characterized by violin brilliance and expressive melodies. And even though Johann Sebastian Bach is primarily associated with Leipzig, he also stayed several times in Dresden and maintained contacts with local musicians. Program:
Johann Sebastian Bach - Gott, der Herr, ist Sonn und Schild, BWV 79
Johann David Heinichen - Sinfonia in D
Christoph Bernhard - Herr, nun lässest du deinen Diener in Frieden fahren
Johann Georg Pisende - Sonata c-Moll
Jan Dismas Zelenka - Missa Sancti Josephi, ZWV 14
