Description
In Romania, songs for Christmas (Colinde) and New Year bring health and prosperity, seek reconciliation with the souls of the deceased, or tell of a life closely connected with nature. Oana Cǎtǎlina Chiţu gives these songs a crystalline magic through her jazz-influenced interpretations and invites you on an acoustic journey to a snowy land at the foot of the Carpathians. Authentically and freely, she approaches the Christmas songs of her homeland together with the Jovanovic Trio led by the well-known accordion virtuoso and a welcomed guest at our club, Dejan Jovanovic. Don't miss this very special Christmas evening at ufaFabrik. Oana Cǎtǎlina Chiţu hails from Humulești in Northern Romania and moved to Berlin in the 1990s. Her repertoire includes tango music from 1930s Bucharest as well as songs of the Roma and from various Balkan cultures. No other singer of the younger generation has approached tangos à la Romanesque as authentically and freely as she does. Oana Cǎtǎlina Chiţu has become known across Europe for her sensitive interpretation of the repertoire of the Romanian folk singer Maria Tănase. The associated album "Divine" and the previous CD "Bucharest Tango" were released by the Berlin label Asphalt Tango Records. Dejan Jovanović grew up in Obrenovac near Belgrade. He came to Berlin in 1999 after winning numerous accordion competitions in Serbia to study classical accordion at the Hanns Eisler Music College. His masterful accordion playing is appreciated and in demand across Europe; in 2021 and 2022, he was honored with scholarships from Musikfonds, GVL, and the German Music Council. Dejan is not only a talented accordionist but also composes for accordion and symphony orchestra. Some of his compositions were performed in Serbia at the New Year’s concert in January 2020 with the RTS Symphony Orchestra. In 2022, Dejan also toured with the Symphony Orchestra "Virtuouzi" in Serbia. His latest project, the "Dejan Jovanovic Ensemble" with the string quintet of the Belgrade Philharmonic and Romanian singer Oana Catalina Chitu, is a heartfelt endeavor. Their first concert took place at the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade and was broadcast multiple times. For the New Year’s concert 2023 at the Kolarac Concert Hall in Belgrade, Dejan premiered some of his works with his ensemble and the "Kamerata" Symphony Orchestra. Vladimir Karparov’s distinctive and expressive music combines contemporary jazz with the rhythmic and melodic richness of Bulgaria’s vibrant folk music. A versatile and inspired composer, he easily crosses genre boundaries and has released successful albums such as "Thracian Dance" (2007), "Forkolor" (2014), "Antihypocrisyl" (2016), "Iglika" (2022). In 2020, he received an award from the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture for promoting Bulgarian culture worldwide. Besides his own projects like the V. Karparov Quartet, Balkan Spirit Ensemble, Forkolor Saxophone Quartet, duo Stawinski & Karparov, and Karparty Brass Band, he actively performs as a guest musician with various ensembles. https://www.vladimirkarparov.com/ Photo: Diana Paun Additional information:
