Between renovating her motel room, cotton candy dreams, and encounters with older women, Miranda July's protagonist shatters patriarchal concepts of femininity and desire. In an intimate diary format and with gentle wit, the novel deeply explores female empowerment and creativity. July's celebrated novel tells of a 45-year-old artist who sets out not to survive the change of life but to thrive in it — with all that entails: desire, doubt, pain, and liberation. Instead of a classic coming-of-age story, we experience a coming-of-change: a late awakening that is radically present and future-oriented. The feminist artist collective storytelling engines brings July's radical prose to the stage as a lively scenic reading. With wit and resistance, three performers tell of a woman who stops functioning — and by doing so, begins to live. What if the end is the beginning? What if the second half of life is very different from what we think? CONCEPT / PERFORMANCE: Lucy Wirth / Tjadke Biallowons / Isabella Bartdorff. SET DESIGN: Christina Berger. OUTSIDE EYE: Tom Schneider. STORYTELLING ENGINES is an artist collective based in Freiburg and Munich, united by an interest in cooperative working methods and an expanded theater concept that makes divisions into genres permeable and processes various materials and themes into politically relevant theater evenings with a feminist focus. With the comic adaptation of ICH FÜHL’S NICHT by Liv Strömquist, the collective performed in Berlin for the first time and received enthusiastic applause at TD.
