Description

Reproductive rights refer to human rights that guarantee everyone the right to make free, self-determined decisions about their body, sexuality, and whether, when, and how many children they want to have without discrimination. Worldwide, reproductive freedoms, such as the right to abortion, are increasingly restricted, and public debates about them are often highly polarized. The exhibition and book project "Atlas of Reproduction" provides a research-based dialogue space. The project is based on several research projects on reproductive inequalities and the global interconnections of family planning, reproductive technologies, health, and mobility. The research has been conducted in recent years at the Institute of Geography and Social Anthropology at the University of Bern. The exhibition and book project was developed as part of the mLAB in collaboration with the Institute of Design Research at the University of the Arts Bern. The exhibition takes place at the Kornhausforum Bern, the finissage at the Politforum Bern, and the film evening at Kino Rex Bern. Eight installations, based on scientific research, explore, for example, photographically, the motives of Spanish egg donors and Russian surrogates. They show filmically how refugee women experience pregnancy in Swiss asylum centers. Or they connect, through a three-part video installation, the experiences of birth mothers from Sri Lanka with the perspectives of adopted children in Switzerland and the view of a scientist. A dialogic program with thematic guided tours, workshops, a Living Library, a role play, a lecture-performance, a book vernissage, and a film evening deepens the topics. The school program particularly targets young people. The exhibition is a collaboration between the Kornhausforum Bern and the University of Bern. Financial support for the exhibition was provided by grants from the Swiss National Science Foundation, the University of Bern, the Johanna Dürmüller-Bol Foundation, Pro Helvetia, the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung, Society in Science – Branco Weiss Fellowship, the Ernst Göhner Foundation, the Bernese municipal community, the University of Bern Research Foundation, the Canton of Zurich – Office of Culture, QueerBooks, and others.
