When Annette Dittert stood in front of Downing Street at midnight on January 31, 2020, to report live on ARD Tagesthemen that Brexit had been finally completed that night, tears suddenly welled up in her eyes just before the broadcast. London had long become her home. Now, the break with the EU was irreversible. For her and many Britons who had hoped for a different outcome until the very end, it was a distressing day. Ten years later, Annette Dittert wonders what has become of the country. She takes us on a journey across the island: We visit the Royal Albert Hall and the House of Lords, swim with the women’s group "Blue Tits" in the sea on the east coast of the island, chat with Scots, priests, and Earls. And we are guests at the author’s Narrowboat Emilia, a small colorful steel boat on the Regent's Canal, right in the center of London. This creates a multifaceted picture of the idiosyncratic and charming Britons, whose precarious economic and social situation is not only felt in everyday life as a result of Brexit but who still always maintain their stance. Ulrich Wickert Annette Dittert was a foreign correspondent for ARD from 1999 until the end of 2025. She is a passionate journalist and filmmaker. She became widely known as a studio manager and correspondent in Warsaw, later in New York, and from 2008 in London. She received two Grimme Awards and the Hanns-Joachim-Friedrichs-Preis for her films. For her coverage of Brexit, she was awarded Journalist of the Year in 2019. She lives in London on her houseboat Emilia.
