The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is one of the most important dance companies in the world. Since its founding by the visionary choreographer Alvin Ailey in 1958, the ensemble has stood for expressiveness, virtuosity, and a captivating blend of modern dance, jazz, spirituals, and African American culture. Ailey's goal was to "bring dance back to the people" – and his works continue to touch audiences worldwide.

Ailey himself is considered one of the most influential choreographers of the 20th century. His experiences from childhood in Texas, collaboration with Lester Horton, and Broadway shaped a distinctive choreographic style that made dance history. With the founding of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, he created an artistic home that focuses on diversity, empowerment, and major human themes. His masterpiece Revelations from 1960 remains the emotional centerpiece of every Ailey season.
