Aloïse

Description

"Nominally a biopic, Liliane de Kermadec's Aloïse from 1975 might be more accurately viewed as an astronomical event (…). Aloïse is a study of two supernovae: Isabelle Huppert, then in the midst of her meteoric rise, and Delphine Seyrig in her 'annus mirabilis' at the peak of her career (…). The woman portrayed by these celebrated actresses – Huppert as young Aloïse, Seyrig from her adulthood until her death – is the Swiss outsider artist Aloïse Corbaz, born in 1886 in Lausanne. She was committed to a psychiatric institution in 1918, where she spent the rest of her life. The art she created there – colorful drawings of voluptuous women, in colored pencil and graphite on wrapping paper – would make her one of the most important representatives of art brut (…). Aloïse is a haunting film that follows its protagonist in fragmented glimpses from childhood to death (…) and attributes her psychological breakdown to the stifling, marginalizing rules and norms of a rigid society."
