The Pas de quatre is a dance for four. And indeed: Albin Brun, Patricia Draeger, Claudio Strebel, and Markus Lauterburg move with dancer-like ease through the repertoire of their new album, through tricky rhythms, surprising harmonies, and magnificent melodies. As a long-standing working band, this quartet combines compositional sophistication with playful precision – and with immense joy of playing, which is also a freedom of playing. Thus, the music moves between jazz and imaginary folk music, plays with nostalgic longings for home, explores the familiar and the foreign, jumps over stylistic boundaries, and beautifully combines melancholy and joy of life as it should.
