Description
«Orange County, California, in the near future: Those who take the so-called drug ‹D› lose all connection to reality and develop multiple personalities. ‹D› has conquered the land, the state is powerless, and the population is spied on by undercover police officers. Even the police officer Bob has succumbed to the substance (…). Since he wears a state-of-the-art camouflage suit, his true identity remains secret – and so he is tasked with spying not only on his friends but also on himself (…). Adapting Philip K. Dick's underlying stories into film can be challenging. Richard Linklater employs the rotoscoping technique he last used in Waking Life for A Scanner Darkly, distancing himself from any established science fiction aesthetics. The plot is simply above any criticism: complex, varied, intelligent, and surprising. What makes A Scanner Darkly interesting is the question of whether it makes sense to shoot a film, especially with renowned actors, only to 'overpaint' it afterwards – and indeed, it does.» (Viennale, Tom Maurer, Oct 2006)
