Symphony No. 4, A Major, op. 90, "Italian" It is his only symphony, because Luigi Cherubini did not want to compete with Beethoven after 1815. When you hear it, you regret it. Cherubini also based his symphonies on Haydn's, but then in a different direction: After a slow introduction, a fireworks display of brilliant themes and brilliantly heightened reprises follow, alternating with wonderfully singing melodies. This symphony by Cherubini was conducted by Mendelssohn, who was a great admirer of the Florentine. The epitome of "Italianità" in the concert hall has become Mendelssohn's lively and brightly instrumented 4th Symphony. The second movement begins with a sustained melody, which is probably meant to represent a religious procession: Mendelssohn was inspired by papal ceremonies in Rome. Like Cherubini, James MacMillian is influenced by Catholicism: parts of his concert for percussion and orchestra are based on the Advent hymn "Veni, veni, Emmanuel." The solo part is highly virtuosic: Tam-Tams, two snare drums, congas, timbales, gongs, woodblocks, and marimba can be heard. In this series of symphony concerts, we can again look forward to a prize winner of the international ARD music competition. Jonas Alber is one of the successful conductors of his generation.
