Johannes Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major, op. 83 Antonín Dvořák Symphony No. 8 in G major, op. 88 "[It is] a very small piano concerto, with a very small scherzo." Of course, that was an understatement, as Brahms was not only a significant symphonist but also a famous pianist in his lifetime. This led to a concert concept where piano and orchestra engage in a dialogue on equal footing! The motivic intertwining of solo and tutti parts is as dense as never before in Brahms. Who would be surprised by the extended elegiac solo of the first cello in the third movement? The soloist in Pforzheim, Herbert Schuch, is a student of Alfred Brendel and one of the most important pianists of his generation. He has performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre, the Bamberger Symphoniker, and the Hessian Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra. Dvořák's cheerful and festive Eighth Symphony is considered the one that most closely approaches program music, with its loosely structured movements, imitated natural sounds, fanfares, traditional Czech melodies, and march rhythms. In the third movement, we hear a real waltz theme, reminiscent of Tchaikovsky. A festival, summer days in the countryside, wonderfully dark green forests in the evening sun seem to pass before the inner eye — if one wishes.
