Description
This concert highlights the fascinating artist Pauline Viardot (1821–1910) – singer, pianist, composer, and a true 'Frau von Welt'. She was the centerpiece of a unique network: Chopin and Clara Schumann were among her close friends, while composers like Saint-Saëns and Rossini wrote specifically for her voice. In her salon in Paris and Baden-Baden, she brought together poets like Iwan Turgenjew and musicians like Brahms, Gounod, and Bizet, thus becoming a bridge of European musical culture that connected borders and styles.
Musically, the program spans Viardot's artistic network: from Rossini's cheerful Regata veneziana to songs by Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms, to arias and songs by Gounod, Saint-Saëns, Chopin, and Bizet. The focus is on Viardot's own, multifaceted works: French Mélodies, Spanish Canciones, and Russian-influenced songs. An outlook on Rita Strohl and Jules Massenet opens the perspective on the next generation.
A concert full of bel canto, passion, and European sound colors inspired by a woman who made music history and is experiencing her revival today.
