Description

The Bourbaki Panorama is a unique fascination: a 112 x 110 meter large circular painting, an entertainment medium from the time before cinema, a European cultural monument, an impressive illusion machine, and a timeless messenger of peace.

The monumental oil painting by Edouard Castres depicts the internment of the French Bourbaki army in the winter of 1871, when 87,000 soldiers were disarmed at the border and taken in by 188 Swiss municipalities with the support of the population, the Red Cross, and the Swiss army.

Learn about the historical background, the humanitarian significance, and the sophisticated interplay of painting and illusion. By the way: the Bourbaki Rotunda is also part of the tour – including the question of why the platform on the ground floor rotates.
