Always on the first Sunday in October, Elm is entirely dedicated to Glarner Alpine Cheese AOP. A fall without cheese market? Impossible.
FALL TIME IS CHEESE MARKET TIME When the leaves turn golden, the air might already be tingling with snow, and then the day still becomes late summer warm, then it's cheese market time. This year on October 5, 2025, it will take place again. Once again in the village center of Elm, in the streets and alleys of the village awarded the Wakker Prize in 1981. The Alpine dairy women present their Glarner Alpine cheese at numerous stalls, each cheese tasting slightly different from each alpine pasture. Soon, the differences become apparent, and the favorite cheese is chosen. Besides Glarner Alpine cheese, there are various other alpine cheese varieties such as Nidelchäs, Chrüter-Alpkäse, etc.
The shopping bags fill up, and you can enjoy the surrounding program around the cheese market. The bell ringers march in and fill the village with impressive chimes, and later, the bells of the decorated cows, which are driven through the village in an alpine procession. PROGRAM 08:00 – 10:30: Hearty Alpine breakfast at the group and community house Elm from 09:00: Tasting and sale at the market stalls 10:00: Jodler mass at the Elm church from 10:00 - 14:00: Every 30 minutes an exciting tour of the slate factory in Sandgasse 11:00: Entry of the bell ringers from 11:00: Live music with the Chlytaler-Örgelern at the festival tent by Hotel Elmer and with the Trio Cozy in the Ziger and fondue tent at the sawmill, the Alphorn band Chlytal-4 plays periodically on the festival grounds from 11:00: Glarner and Alpine specialties at the festival tents 13:15: Wiggis bell ringers 13:45: Drawing of the main prizes of the Glarner Cheese Pass by Glarnerland Agrotourism around 14:30: Alpine descent (Route: Elm Sports Buses - Elm Station via bypass and back via village street) ADDITIONAL HIGHLIGHTS
