Description

For twenty years, apartig has represented six musicians from the Upper Valais: united by a shared passion for folk music and the desire to continually give it new forms of expression.
Rooted in Valais and open to new influences, apartig nurtures both regional traditions and new folk music in all its diversity.
At the center is a distinctive sound, shaped by compositions from Tobias Salzgeber and David Elsig. Their pieces naturally blend tradition and modernity: familiar melodies meet new harmonies and surprising rhythms, local meets foreign with much musical curiosity.
The repertoire is complemented by theater music and adaptations of literary texts. Particularly influential are the works of Tobias Salzgeber for various stage projects, including "Jakobea – in the Shadow of the Three Towers" (2025), "Soldier & Devil" (2024), the open-air theater "Valais Dance of Death" (2022), and "tenebrae" (2013), an adaptation of the short story "The Lord of the Skies" by Wilfried Meichtry (2017).
Additionally, apartig has had the opportunity to present its music on numerous stages both domestically and abroad: for instance, at the renowned Verbier Festival, as the Valais representation at the EXPO in Milan, and at federal folk music and yodeling festivals. Television and radio broadcasts, as well as performances at festivals like Stubete am See in the Tonhalle Zurich, the Altdorf Folk Music Festival, or the Heiden Festival, are also highlights in the ensemble's history.
At the same time, apartig remains committed to its roots: Valais folk music is preserved through pieces by the Natischer composer Amadé Salzmann as well as through arrangements of traditional Upper Valais dances – for example, from the repertoire of the legendary Gebrüder Walpen (d’Walpini).
Furthermore, the ensemble also dedicates itself to Swiss folk music in its entirety. With fine arrangements of Schottisch, Polka, and more – including from the Hanny-Christen collection – apartig bridges the gap between regional tradition and the national cultural heritage.
