Einojuhani Rautavaara "Cantus Arcticus", Concert for Birds and Orchestra, OP. 61 Igor Stravinsky
The Firebird, Ballet Suite for Orchestra "Haven't I Heard This Before?" Featuring "Eliza’s Aria" from the ballet "Wild Swans" based on the fairy tale by H. C. Andersen, the Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin, born in Tashkent, achieved worldwide success. The fairy-tale magical sound world of this music is originally created through vocalise of a soprano voice. In Pforzheim, this role is taken by an instrument that itself possesses something magical: the theremin. Its sound is produced without contact. For this performance, Elena Kats-Chernin has specially arranged a version with theremin – a world premiere! The solo part is performed by the celebrated theremin virtuoso Carolina Eyck, Echo Classic Award winner and guest of renowned concert series such as the BBC Proms. With "Leyohmi," Carolina Eyck also performs an original composition. In Rautavaara’s "Cantus Arcticus," birds also have a voice: in this "concert for animal sounds and orchestra," a rapid dialogue unfolds between Arctic bird calls and the soundscapes of the symphony orchestra. Another fairy-tale magic concludes the evening: Stravinsky’s ballet suite "The Firebird" combines Russian folk music and French instrumentation art into a fireworks display.
