Symphony No. 8, C minor, Op. 65 Antonín Dvořák's Cello Concerto in B minor was composed in New York. Its status as one of the most significant works of its kind is also due to personal circumstances: the composition is influenced by Dvořák's longing for his Bohemian homeland. When his young love – and later sister-in-law – fell seriously ill, he incorporated a quote from her favorite song, "Lasst mich allein," into the second movement. After her death in May 1896, the composer also included this quote in the final movement – instead of a solo cadenza. This section stands out through unusual orchestration and bold harmony, showcasing Dvořák's creative range. A goosebump moment! Maria Zaitseva is internationally sought after as a soloist. The cellist studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory and won, among other awards, 1st prize at the ARD Music Competition 2024. The Cello Concerto marks the beginning of modernity. Yet, here we still encounter the unbroken world of the 19th century: the experience of the individual is central. Nearly fifty years later, this world has vanished. Shostakovich, in his eighth symphony – amidst the Second World War – reflects on the broken promises of modernity. The individual threatens to disappear in mass society. The composer creates music that leads through apocalyptic scenes, without entirely abandoning the dream of restoring humanity.
