If only we also had orchestral music from her! Fanny Hensel left behind an overture, a few cantatas, wonderful chamber music, and a large number of songs and piano pieces. But when she began to appear as a “public” composer with printed works at the age of forty, supported by her husband Wilhelm Hensel (and against the reservations of her brother Felix Mendelssohn), she had only about a year left to live. Therefore, there will never be a symphony by Fanny Hensel. However, the composer Detlev Glanert has now orchestrated her great piano cycle “Das Jahr.” This is no easy task, as the much-praised pianist of her time wrote a delicate, transparent, virtuosic piano part. The twelve monthly pieces and the reflective postlude combine moods, landscape impressions, and chorales into a great poetic whole. It has often been suspected that the trip to Italy, which Hensel undertook two years earlier with her husband and their nine-year-old son, provided crucial inspiration here.

If Béla Bartók was also inspired by a landscape in his first piano concerto, it must have been quite a fantastic night landscape: rugged and pulsating, with a piano that preferred to belong to the percussion instruments, then again enchantingly sensual and mysteriously glowing. An ingenious, astonishing piece that has lost none of its power in the hundred years since its creation. Yes, unlike Fanny Hensel, Béla Bartók could joyfully indulge as an “enfant terrible.” The pianist Yulianna Avdeeva, internationally established in the very top piano league since winning the Chopin Competition in 2010, will let all Bartók facets sparkle.
