Workshop: Yelli (yodel) and polyphonic singing of the Baka

In this workshop, we will explore and learn the Yelli (yodel) and polyphonic singing of the Baka. For generations, the polyphony of the Baka people, living in the rainforests of Central Africa, has been woven into daily life – from work to rituals. Among the Baka, singing strengthens the community, brings healing, and soothes children. The Yelli, mainly sung by women at dawn, is believed to enchant animals, create harmony with the forest, and promote hunting success.

Su Hart is a community singing facilitator, composer, and lead singer of "Baka Beyond," an internationally touring Afro-Celtic dance group rooted in the music of the Baka forest people. Since 1992, she has spent much time in Cameroon with Baka women, who introduced her to their singing traditions and enabled her to teach beyond the forest. Her teaching style is inclusive and joyful, encouraging active listening, confidence, and enjoyment. She gives back to the Baka through the charity organization "Global Music Exchange."
