After the novel by Cătălin Dorian Florescu ‹Wunderzeit› tells of growing up in dictatorial Romania – of confinement and fear, but also of longing, love, and the dream of freedom. With wit and melancholy, Cătălin Dorian Florescu describes in his first novel the everyday life between scarcity and hope – always against the backdrop of planned emigration from the dictatorship. Years later, Alin lives in Switzerland and looks back on his past from there. Arriving in a new country becomes a central moment of memory: freedom means security, but also foreignness, language barriers, and living with a migration background. The text reminds us how fragile freedom is – and how much origin and memory shape life in the present. The Romanian director Ilinca Purică, together with Linus Schütz and the team, went on a research trip to Romania to deepen their engagement with the novel. Encounters with people, places, and stories on site influenced the development of the production. A takeover by Bühnen Bern, in cooperation with the collective ‹Wunderzeit›.
