A LIFE AS A MODERN NOMAD At 28, Tamar Valkenier leaves her secure life as a criminal psychologist behind and swaps her career for freedom. What begins as a one-year journey on a self-built bicycle becomes a life plan that has taken her through the most remote regions of the Earth for over ten years. Although she has hardly any possessions, she feels richer than ever.
Whether skiing with a pulka, riding horses, camels, and dogs through Mongolia, or walking through the New Zealand Alps – Tamar is not seeking records but the real life away from roads, mobile networks, and comfort. She lives for weeks on what nature provides, crossing wild rivers, braving snow and storms, and learning how little it takes to be happy.
Her travels to the Altai Mountains are particularly formative, where she befriends Kazakh nomads and eagle hunters. She learns to ride, lead camels, and hunt with a golden eagle. After years of training, she eventually wins a traditional eagle competition herself – an extraordinary achievement in a centuries-old culture. From her connection to the people, a charitable organization is also born to support struggling nomads. With great openness, humor, and self-irony, Tamar Valkenier tells of a life full of freedom, encounters, and adventure. Her report is an inspiring story about the courage to leave familiar paths and the realization that the greatest adventure often begins where the comfort zone ends.
