Description

One of the oldest carnival traditions in Switzerland can be found in Wil SG, which can be traced back to the year 1510. On Gümpelimittwoch at 19:01, the Wiler Tüüfel (founded in 1595) parade out of the courtyard gate and the herald reads out the bulls to officially open the Wiler Fastnacht. The prince and princess, who "reign" for two years, can of course also be found here. Dirty Thursday at the Wiler Fastnacht belongs to the youngsters with the children's masked ball in the afternoon and in the evening it is all about the women at the "Wiiber Fastnacht". On Friday, the new court jester, also an honorable figure at the Wiler Fastnacht, is inaugurated for one year at the court jester's ball. Several well-known personalities have already held this venerable office. Bobsleigh legend Hans "Hausi" Leutenegger, internationally renowned coach Christian Gross, SVP politician Lukas Reimann and not forgetting our incumbent Federal Councillor Karin-Keller Sutter. Saturday belongs entirely to the weird sounds, where all the Guggenmusik bands from near and far meet in the early evening in the old town of Wil for the Monster Guggenkonzert. The old town becomes a seething cauldron and goosebumps are guaranteed when over 200 musicians perform the Guggenmarsch and other well-known pieces. From Gümpelimittwoch to Faschingsdienstag there is also a state of emergency (Freinacht) in the town of Wil, where the well-known Beizen (restaurant) carnival takes place and various parties and masked balls are held. These begin as early as five weeks beforehand to get into the mood for the festive season. The finale is the big carnival parade through Wil and ends with the burning of the Nörgeli alternating fairy tale figure in the Bleichen parking lot. With over 15,000 visitors, the Wil carnival procession is one of the biggest events in the region.
