Description
None of Janáček's operas can be called comic; although humor is never lacking, it is more of a rare spice. In the opera about a cottage owner from Malá Strana, a typically Czech little man, Janáček is bursting with humor – albeit quite sharp. Janáček found inspiration in the popular beetle novels of the poet Svatopluk Čech and complemented his satire with music in a dance rhythm and the use of unusual instruments, such as the glass harmonica and bagpipes.
