John Howe's art appeals to all generations and even offers a common bridge to foster exchanges on themes that excite them. He often transmits a literary and poetic heritage — sometimes ancestral — through contemporary vectors favored by the public. John Howe is one of the most recognized and acclaimed artists internationally, among other things for his pictorial interpretation of Tolkien's literary work, presented in illustrated editions, adapted into cinema by Peter Jackson, on TV platforms, or in board games and video games. Thus, John Howe is the only artist to have provided a visual extension to Tolkien's work across so many vectors, both traditional and contemporary. The inaugural exhibition at La Tour du Fantastique is dedicated to him and features, across four floors, more than 250 drawings and paintings in a completely new route and scenography. Complemented by historical works and objects from city museums, this exhibition highlights, among other things, the influence of J. R. R. Tolkien's travels in Switzerland on the description of the landscapes in his novels, notably La Tène, which takes its name from the archaeological site discovered by the lake of Neuchâtel, likely inspiring Tolkien to imagine the lake city of Lake Town in The Hobbit.
